Devlog 07: Back in the kitchen!

Hey everyone! We’re back from break and super excited to dive back into development on Soup Showdown! This marks the end of Sprint 1, and we’re wrapping it up with lots of progress and a fresh mindset heading into Sprint 2.

Art

Our artists have been cranking out assets and polishing up the kitchen! This week, they:

  • Finished the cauldron and cabinets
  • Created a drive-thru window and decorative window
  • Made a utensil rack, pots and pans, a bomb model, and three other utensils
  • Designed the game’s logo
  • Carefully arranged meshes in the level to bring the kitchen environment to life

The space is looking fuller, livelier, and way more fun to play in!

Programming

The programming team tackled a bunch of new gameplay features and polish:

  • Added stirring indications and animations 🌀
  • Implemented base functionality for different utensils 🥄
  • Added visual indicators and animations for ingredients in the pot
  • Fixed player initialization and lifetimes between scenes
  • Introduced a stun indicator 😵
  • Developed utensil selection
  • Got bomb functionality working 💣
  • Tweaked player movement to feel more slidy on the kitchen floor 🧼
  • And finally—finished the winning screen! 🎉

Sound

Our sound designer is now fully in implementation mode, dropping in all the SFX and music we’ve been building up. The added audio is already bringing a lot of charm and feedback to the game.

As Sprint 1 wraps up, we’re taking time to reflect on what went well and what we can improve. We’ve learned a lot, and we’re excited to carry those lessons into Sprint 2 with renewed energy and focus.

Thanks for keeping up with us—we’ll see you in the next devlog! 🍲💥
